Mary Somerville Gets a Tenner

Scots Scientist First Woman

Scots scientist Mary Somerville was the mother of six children, but found the time to become a world famous mathematician and scientist and she will be the first woman whose image has adorned the Royal Bank of Scotland’s banknotes, other than the queen.

Mary Not so Contrary Was a Great Scot

Mary played a pivotal role in the discovery of the planet Neptune and many knotty mathematical ideas. Indeed we have her to thank for the term “scientist” Her scientific works included other important books on science and mathematics. The term "scientist" was coined by William Whewell in an 1834 review of her On the Connexion of the Sciences. Mary was a prolific writer and a great Scot and is a great woman to have this honour bestowed upon her. Her likeness will be on the new RBS notes in 2017.
