Scots Wha Hae – And They want us to be Worried About Black Friday
Scots Wha Hae –
And They want us to be Worried About Black Friday
'Now's the day, an now's the hour:
See the front o battle lour,
See approach proud Edward's power -
Chains and Slaverie
Robert Burns, Scots Wha Hae
Did you know that Robert Burn’s publisher in Edinburgh was also Beethoven’s? Yes, I was taught by a descendent of his called George and he told me so. The song was written in tempestuous times, so rather like our own, and it harks back to a glorious hour. There have been many renditions, even a punk one by the Real McKenzies a Canadian Celtic punk band. (It seems they are everywhere; remember the one we found in Italy?)
Veering from the Past to the Future
So it seems strange to veer from the past to the future, but I’ll give it a go, because I am talking about the dreaded Black Friday once again. It seems research that all encompassing animal, has shown that Glaswegian shoppers are planning to spend an average of £197 on Black Friday, up from £60 last year. This is the day after Thanksgiving which falls on the last Thursday in November and celebrates the survival of the Pilgrim Fathers in the New World, a feat aided greatly by Native Americans. So with a tummy full of turkey the inhabitants of the USA go crackers and spend a heap of wampum after a day’s abstinence from the World Wide Web.
Black Friday – Cyber Monday – Take Back Tuesday
A madness that we are not immune from as a survey found that a total of 43 per cent of Scots intend to splash out on Black Friday or Cyber Monday – in Glasgow the figure is 51 per cent, but for Edinburgh it stands at 33 per cent. Edinburgh was also found to be the city in the UK were residents were most likely to avoid the sales, with 23 per cent of those quizzed saying they were not interested. But many others have been holding off buying till the sales on the Friday and on Cyber Monday.
No Need to Wait
Well here at James Pirie you don’t need to hold off until the sales to get a great bargain. Time and time again we take a red pencil to those prices and knock a load of cash off. In fact the joke goes that certain members of staff only know how to divide by two as we have so many half price offers. Well that’s modern education for you, long may it continue.
