Movie Stars Enlisted to Save Gallery –

‘ Jedi’  Star Ewan McGregor Leads Fight to Save Art Space

Hollywood A-listers, rock stars and the director of one New York’s Guggenheim Museum have all entered the fray save an Edinburgh contemporary gallery. The lead singer of Indie band Travis Fran Healy, Val Kilmer and Ewan McGregor have all joined more than 200 world renowned people trying to save the capital’s Inverleith House as “a beacon of our culture”. The venue is under the control of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) whose trustees decided last month to close the venue. The stars of popular and high brow culture all pleaded with the trustees to reconsider the decision. The gallery managed to combine the visual arts with a botanical experience for over 30 years, not an easy task I’d say.

The Iceman Cometh

Top Gun star Val Kilmer who played ‘Iceman’ in the 1986 film is a keen art collector and has works by Ed Ruscha the celebrated US artist who has exhibited at Inverleith House. Other stars protesting are the writers Irvine Welsh, Ian Rankin and Ali Smith; and Dougie Payne the drummer with Travis. Shoulders to shoulder with them in the plea to the trustees are artists Tracey Emin, Douglas Gordon, Jeremy Deller, Richard Wright, Antony Gormley, Boyce and Cornelia Parker. RBGE’s announcement of the immediate the closure of the gallery, at the end of its annual season provoked a demonstration by more than 700 art lovers.

Not a Miracle

Well it all looks a little bit bleak for Inverleith House, but as the last exhibition was entitled “I Still Believe in Miracles” we can hope for a change of heart for this beloved venue in the capital.  Well here you don’t have to believe in miracles to get a good deal at James Pirie. Royal Scot Crystal is a brand to cherish and love in your home. And because it’s a cold wet day there is money off. Enjoy!
