A Wee Deoch an’ Doris –

Distillers Boom Time

Now I like a man that is a man; a man that's straight and fair.
The kind of man that will and can, in all things do his share.
Och, I like a man a jolly man, the kind of man, you know,
The chap that slaps your back and says, "Jock, just before ye go...”

Now regular readers will know that I am very fond of a dram and not a stranger to gin based drinks like the wildly alcoholic Negroni. So It was pleasant news to hear that the number of distilleries in Scotland is ready to double in a decade. And it is a curve that is rising with the global appetite for whisky and gin rising. And there are small places making the more obscure Scottish spirits like rum, vodka, tequila, brandy and absinthe. Now there are 160 distillery licences in issue in Scotland. That was up from 149 in 2017 and 90 in 2010. It’s a proud tradition indeed. The Scotch Whisky Association, which sells the nectar in 180 countries, said that there were 128 distilleries producing Scotland’s magical spirit. This is more than at any time since the end of the Second World War with exports reaching almost £4.4 billion last year.

Scotland’s Pride

And of course Scotland produces 70% of the UK production of gin Hendrick’s, Gordon’s and Tanqueray are all made north of the border. In fact it is estimated that more than 110 varieties of gin are made in Scotland. I haven’t tried then all, but I can testify to the quality and depth of taste of the ones I have tried. Smashing I say! And of course the craze for gin doesn’t seem to be diminishing, probably because the mixers you can get these days are beyond fabulous and are probably keeping a pub or two in business in these pursy times. It’s the wife’s birthday this Friday so I had better get mixing up something special for her, though she’s fonder of a fine whisky than she is of gin based tipples.
