Droning on about St Valentine’s-
Will the Skies Soon Be Full of Airborne Freight?
If you live in a remote place then it is likely that you will be one of the first beneficiaries of drone service, for prescription drugs and essentials supplies. Well yes, if you read a bit about Scotland’s prisons you’ll see that drones already supply the inmates with drugs of a rather different kind, but the future may see that turned to the good for law abiding folk. Now NHS Highland in one of Scotland’s most rugged regions could become the first in the UK to deliver medical supplies between doctors, patients and hospitals using drones. It will be most welcome and you don’t catch something from the wait in the dispensary, which is a hazardous place at this time of year. The health authority is spread over hundreds of miles and covers more than 40 per cent of Scotland. They would also reduce the pollution levels of transporting supplies by vehicle and guarantee shorter delivery times. They are getting quite excited about it. They are currently looking for development partners to work with them. I do hope the drones are weather proof because the conditions can be extreme.
Flying Doctors No- Flying Chemist Yes
Despite having a tiny population of only 321,000 NHS Highland is the largest health board in Scotland and covers 12,500 square miles. It has 10,000 NHS staff, 100 GP practices and 25 hospitals. And of course many of the isolated places can be cut off in winter meaning that drones would be the only way to reach patients. But they’ll need licences from the Civil Aviation Authority and some pretty robust drones. NHS Highland is pretty keen needing a service that can deal with the worst aspects of the weather and their mountainous terrain but still be resilient and reliable. They reckon they think a service that is safe and secure is of paramount importance. Well doen to them if they can get this particular idea off the ground and keep it there.
