Faker Farmer Winds Up Experts
Now I am a fan of archaeology and one of the many things I do on my holidays is to trudge off to the nearest site of historical interest and take a look at what the local landscape offers. Last September I went round an old Moorish castle in Silves and very nice too. It positively reeked of history. But sometimes what we think is truly historic isn’t. Ask Historic Scotland. A stone circle thought to be thousands of years old wasn’t. It turned out to be a lot more modern after a farmer admitted building it in the 1990s. It was in fact a fake. A very nice fake, but it was never meant to be taken seriously. It is in Leochel-Cushnie in Aberdeenshire and it was a so called ‘recumbent stone circle.’ Historic Environment Scotland and Aberdeenshire council’s archaeology service thought they were quids in with such a local little marvel, but it was too good to be true.
Squaring the Circle
The authorities tried to put a good spin on it all, saying that it showed good local knowledge, but it must have been a disappointment to lose an ancient monument. Recumbent stone are unique to the north-east of Scotland and these circles usually go back 3,500-4,500 years. However, in this case the stones were made as a pastime and kind of tribute to the past. Well done to that farmer for doing his research and making an accurate fake.
