Oligarchs and Others –

Scotch Whisky Now a Safe Haven

I don’t know about you, but for this Christmas I got a few bottles of fine Scotch to enjoy throughout the year and for anyone that knows me well it is a great standby gift that will never get wasted and never get neglected. It seems that that rule also applies to the super rich and the despots of foreign countries who are stashing their ill gotten gains in whisky. Yes money laundering has reached the dram. Despots who are looting the wealth of developing countries are using Scotch whisky to invest their stolen cash experts claim. Obviously they go a bit beyond the handful of bottles lurking happily in my drinks cupboard, I don’t have anything as fine as a  drinks cabinet I’m afraid. But it seems that foreign autocrats love Scotch whisky as a go-to investment alongside London property, fine art, supercars and fine wine. Maybe I’ll upgrade the cupboard!

The Kitchen Cabinet?

This is because the super wealthy live in a parallel financial system where the normal rules of trade and taxation do not apply. I bet they have cabinets! Once money has been looted from whatever regime they live in they stash it in offshore bank accounts and from there they can move it quietly round the world. It is a staggering thought. And of course because Scotch is one of the finest drinks in the world, hand on heart I would have to say the finest but I am willing to admit the possibility that other brews are of fine quality. It has of course seen the rise in value of rare Scotches, but good Despots who are looting the wealth of developing countries are using Scotch whisky to invest their stolen cash, a money-laundering expert has claimed.
