Holiday Scorcher Over

Back to the Grind

Well I almost built my store for the canoes over the long weekend, but fell at the last hurdle and now it is back normal and working in the evenings to finish things off.   And after that time for swimming lessons again as I can’t swim hardly at all, the result of my father throwing me in the deep end when I was 8 and some so and so sitting on me on the bottom till the lifeguard hauled them off.  But am I deterred, well only a little bit? It is the Robert the Bruce approach, try and try again that will work out in the end.  All over the nation we had record Easter temperatures, but we’ll be back down with a bump soon enough I reckon.  However, warm weather does put us all at risk of fire in the most unlikely places. Firefighters spent Monday working through the night to tackle a large wildfire near a wind farm in Moray. Around 15:00 on Monday flames were spotted near Paul's Hill wind farm at Knockando, south west of Elgin and  50 firefighters were needed to contain the blaze which covered an huge area six miles by two miles.  Luckily no one was hurt in any way.

Adders and Subtractors

The warm weather brought out another little known creature the adder. I’d never been close to one, until last year when we were visiting friends in Sweden and there was a huge so and so  on the track in front of us in rural east Swede. Now Scots police are urging people to stay safe around snakes after a number of sightings of adders.  The Argyll and West Dunbartonshire police told locals to be cautious when out and about as the adders have come out of hibernation. In the Tarbert area there have been numerous sighting reported. Adders are our only venomous snakes and they often bask in the sunshine in woodland glades and on heathlands. With the Scottish summer they must be optimists too to want a bit of basking in.  But an adder bite is a very rare occurrence, and can be painful, but is almost never fatal.
