Humpback Whales Returning- Huge Sea Mammals off Scottish Coast
Humpback Whales Returning-
Huge Sea Mammals off Scottish Coast
As a seaside dweller myself I am always pleased to have new species to look out for and the latest is the Humpback whale which appears to be making a comeback in Scottish waters after a long hiatus. A site off Lewis is the most important place for spotting the great beasties but they have also been seen off the east coast from Montrose to the Ythan estuary, north of Aberdeen; the Moray Firth; the Northern and Western Isles; the Minch and the Firth of Forth. They’ve been in the Clyde too. These giants can grow to 16 metres (52ft) long and weigh about 36 tonnes. The humpback sightings off Scotland have increased since the mid-2000s.
Annual Migration Changes
Numbers of whales are on the increase as they recover from the end of commercial whaling and the recovery of the krill, tiny beasts that they eat. It is entirely possible that these few whales are outliers, testing the waters so to speak for much greater numbers to come. These waters may soon be a part of their annual migration patterns as climate variances send the food down further south.
Well I would Wouldn’t I?
Well to shoehorn a sales pitch into this story I have to look at some other newcomers to our world and by jings there is a new decanter on the block, and it’s a unique and beautifully hand made and cut Flower of Scotland Round Thistle Shaped Spirit Decanter.
