Scottish Roads Lack Phone Coverage-
Breaking Down May Be a Lonely Experience
I’ve just said goodbye to my 21 year old Jeep and I won’t miss one of the downsides of driving an elderly car and that is the prospect of a breakdown. Don’t get me wrong I loved my old blue 4x4 and it was always a pleasure to drive. It also made me a very careful driver as it had a 4 litre engine and I still managed 23.8 miles a gallon on average. We’ve gone to a 999cc modern engine now. However, the whenever you break down it is always inconvenient, expensive and occasionally dangerous. What is always significant is whatever the problem how many bars there are on your phone and how much battery is left on the phone. So I was shocked to learn that there are more than 5,000 miles of Britain’s roads where drivers cannot call for help because there is no mobile phone coverage. Phew! That’s a lot. As regular readers know I live on the land’s edge and there is barely a phone signal here so I sympathise with drivers.
That 5,000 plus miles works out at 2% of all of the UK’s roads where there is absolutely no coverage from any network at all. Naturally enough the top ten local authorities most affected include Highland nothing for 910 miles, Powys a dangerous 411 miles and Cumbria a lonely 296 miles. The Scottish Borders have a 192 miles of zero cell phone coverage. And to add insult to potential injury nearly 45,000 miles of roadways have only partial coverage. This is 18 per cent of all roads. I know when I have driven in the USA that outside of the major arteries or the urban areas there is a virtual black out on phone coverage. If you use your smartphone rather than a Sat Nav for getting around you’ll be up the creek on those nearly 50,000 miles of roads in the UK. I knew there was a reason for still using my Sat Nav and not a smartphone!
