Scotland’s Domain a Reality –

You Can Have .scot or .blether –Who Knew

Now those of you who know about such things will have told many people about how the internet names for domains came into being, but the rest of us like me just accept how they are and use them. But did you know that .com  was for commerce and .net was for sites related to the internet itself  and .edu was educational sites. But of course it all got terribly messed up quickly and domain snobbery entered into it. Why have a .uk when you can have a .com?  All very strange and inward looking. But now you can forget all of that and be Scottish on the World Wide Web if you want to express your Scots identity  you will be able to  have a .scot email addresses for the first time.

Digital National Pride

Because demand is soaring the not for profit organisation that runs these things in Scotland is preparing to give us all a dose of internet tartan as consumers will be able to buy email domains ending in @mail.scot or @blether.scot giving the Scottish diaspora a virtual link to the homeland. And this is good for those who don’t want a Scottish website, just an email address to celebrate their Scottish connections.  The people in charge reckon that 10,000 people will buy a .scot email address over the next 12 months. It is part of an acknowledgement of the strength of regional identity in the UK and national identity in Scotland. There are now 18,000 .scot websites in the country, 12,000 of which are active. Some of the strongest demand came from Scotland, where 71 per cent of consumers claimed that they would be more likely to buy from a firm that used a .scot web address. But you may ask who were the people commissioning the report?

Old Ways May Be Better

Well we here at James Pirie are proud of our history and are fierce in the love that we lavish on the business. We are always interested in the latest trends that sweep the internet, but we are always a little chary of change for change’s sake and we’ll keep an eye on how things develop in the domain world before we do anything radical. We like that our old fashioned attention to detail, keen customer support and extensive ranges attracts many a compliment so we’ll just carry on doing what we do best for the moment and not do anything that’s out with that.  And there is nothing more down to earth than our whisky gift offering. My son gave me a dram of an  English celebrity single grain whisky over the weekend to say thank you for some help and the first words out of my mouth were ‘this isn’t fit for a James Pirie glass.’ It was terrible stuff,  barely fit for cleaning spark plugs. So not everything new is for the best, unlike the Royal Scot Crystal - Edinburgh - 4 Crystal Small Whisky Tumblers which are five star rated by our customers and on at half price for you.
