Flash Floods and Road Closures
The Scottish Autumn in Full Swing
I heard today about flash floods in Majorca and the nastiness that ensued. A huge wave of muddy water engulfed the town of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, in the east of the island, after a river burst its banks following heavy rain. Nature is always taking us by surprise. On Majorca vehicles were swept away as water gushed through narrow streets. And the Spanish military is deploying more than 100 emergency workers along with sniffer dogs to help rescue efforts. Meanwhile in Scotland the A83 at the Rest and Be Thankful in Argyll is closed after multiple landslips when 2,500 tonnes of landslide debris reached the catch-fences above the carriageway. A diversion of some 60 miles is in place. The has been a deal of heavy rain and the slope near the Old Military Road and the A83 carriageway was impassable to maintenance workers. The military road was of course built after the Rising in 45.
A 60 Mile Diversion
As I write the prospect of opening the road is distant, but a break in the weather was allowing maintenance workers to access the area and a geotech to assess the likelihood of further landslips at the Rest and Be Thankful. The debris fences caught the worst of the slip and there is only 150 tonnes of muck actually on the road, but unlike in Majorca it hasn’t been necessary to call in the army. I extend my sympathy to all those who have to endure the 60 mile diversion, no doubt in much worse than usual traffic and nasty weather.
A Zero Mile Diversion
Which is one good reason to sit in the comfort of your home or office and shop on line with an institution like James Pirie. Otherwise you might miss out on the Royal Scot Crystal - Flower of Scotland Tot (Shot) Straight Sided glass in a gift Box. It is a very small glass only takes 2 oz, but it is five star customer rated and currently on at half price. But big enough for a dram or shot. Enjoy.
