Massive Sculpture a Tribute to Scots Explorer

A five metre tall grizzly bear will be a fitting tribute to a famous son of Dunbar who went on to help found the National Parks of the USA. This East Lothian pioneer was born in 1838 and he went on to become a much loved figure in America, inspiring thousands with his love of nature.  Now planning permission has been received for the artwork in to be placed in his hometown. It will be able to be viewed on a walkway around the grizzly which will be approximately twice life-size. They are pretty fierce and dreadfully intimidating and perilous to be close to, even those who have them around the farm or property can find out to their cost this waywardness to their behaviour. The sculpture like the bear will come out of hibernation in the spring and be unveiled at a ceremony celebrating Muir’s achievements as one of the world’s first environmentalists.  The art work bear is being made of welded steel and fabricated from steel plates of various thicknesses. I’ve had a glimpse and it is a marvel.

Muir of the Mountains

John Muir was known as "John of the Mountains" and "Father of the National Parks"  was an author, environmental philosopher, glaciologist, and early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States: Which can’t have made him too popular at the time what with all that expansion in the USA at the time. He helped preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and many other wilderness areas. He founded the Sierra Club, which is a American conservation organization and was prominent in the establishment of the Yosemite a national park. The sculpture will be a fine tribute in his native Dunbar.
