Angler’s Cliff Hanger- Destiny Almost Sealed and Pupped
Angler’s Cliff Hanger-
Destiny Almost Sealed and Pupped
A long time ago when I was still pretty much unafraid of anything I was climbing on a sandstone cliff with my pal Matt when we were overtaken by rain and had to abandon the series of climbs. Instead as number two I had to bring up all the little steel nuts and wires we used to anchor ourselves on the cliff. Now this is not an easy job in any weather, but in pouring rain and with darkness falling. (It was this time of year) I got slower and slower and eventually had a crowd of climbers cheering me on and giving every kind of conflicting advice until I flung myself over the final edge and lay there with my specs streaming with water and blown like a horse on the Pony Express. All was well until I woke up next morning with severe vertigo which stayed with me for many and giddy year. So when I read of a fisherman in trouble on cliffs my sympathies went out to him. Now this fisherman didn’t have Matt to give him trouble he had fifty aggressive seals on his case. The seals and their pups turned on the angler as he walked along the beach near Eyemouth in the Borders.
Rock and a Hard Place
So there he was stuck between a rock and fifty hard cases and rescuers used a rope to lower a coastguard officer down 75 feet to where the man was stuck on the cliff face. With the aid of a rope and the coastguard he was to scramble up the cliff face all in the dark just like I had been all those years ago. An RNLI lifeboat, whose crew are all volunteers remember, was waiting offshore and able to navigate between the seals and pick up the rescuer and the angler and then ferried them both to Eyemouth Harbour. Such aggressive seals are uncommon and the angler was fairly unlucky, but once roused they can be a handful. Luckily the fisherman had a fully charged mobile phone to call for help, a good lesson for us all.
