Gin Is It, At Least for Some
Well we’ve just had World Gin Day, don’t ask me how I missed it, but there it was on the second Saturday of June which has been officially designated World Gin Day and has been since 2008. By jings I am behind the times. And Scottish gin is set, so the trending graphs say, to outsell our native tipple and national pride, whisky by 2020, which is good news and bad for distillers who are adapting to our changing tastes. The process to make both drinks starts the same with ethanol — a pure grain spirit and this common ancestry makes it possible for whisky distilleries to flip between producing the amber nectar, Scotch, and the trending delight gin. So you could say with such a grand old industry the Scots had a head start in producing fine gins. The number of distilleries in Scotland enabled the country to achieve success in the gin industry.
Gin Revolution to Last?
And as we’ve talked about before gin is quick to make Gin and mature so it can be produced and sold almost immediately. What makes Scottish gins so great is their botanicals, the various flavours that give the gin its oomph. People now take an interest in what goes into their drinks and see it as an expression of their individuality and relish the distinctiveness of the drinks. So gins made in the Highlands can be made to reflect the place they come from and so on. Hopes are high that the Gin Revolution will last longer than the vodka boom that came and went fairly quickly and so far it seems that gin is going from strength to strength, which can only be good for Scotland’s exports and the national purse.
