Gin and It, No Gin Is It –

On Trend Drink in Scotland

Have you noticed the way that gin is taking over the world? This tasty drop was once was called ’mother’s ruin’ and featured in Hogarth’s  engraving and art in ‘The Rakes’ Progress’ where drunk mothers dropped bairns by the wayside. But since the turn of the century this brew has become the tipplers choice. Regular readers might recall I went to several English based tennis matches recently and gin was very definitely to the fore in terms of sponsors, not just for the brew, but the all important mixers. Now a popular Speyside whisky distilleries has clambered aboard the band wagon and launched its own small-batch London Dry style gin. Now when you see the term’ London Dry’ it doesn’t mean it’s from the English capital, it is just the style of the gin. And a very acceptable style it is.

Gin Inspired by Mountains and Lochs

The new small batch gin from this well known distillery is inspired by Scotland’s mountains, forests and coastal fringes featuring signature notes of juniper and the citrus elements of bitter orange, with aromatic sea buckthorn, floral pearls of heather and ‘chocolate’ rowanberries.  It also has the advantage for the makers that you can make and consume or sell the spirit shortly after making it, unlike whisky which has to age gradually  and takes years before you can take it to market, which is a pretty good thing for the whisky but a front loaded cost for the distiller. The new small batch gin is made in a new copper pot still that has affectionately been named’ Peggy.’ I’ve recently been trying Negronis, don’t drive after one of those I can tell you, which is a delicious cocktail if gin, Vermouth and Campari. Two of them and no secret is safe! The new gin will go at £30 a pop.
