Jam, Jute and Journalism –

80th Anniversary for Grand Old Comic

Now it is not often that something that touches so many lives, and in a positive way, reaches the age of 80, but  The Beano, that illustrious product of Dundee has become Britain’s longest running children’s comic. It used to be said of Dundee that it ran on Jam, Jute and Journalism and by jings it did well on them. Jam is still there and so is journalism and comics, but about jute I am not so sure. And jewel in the comics crown is The Beano which was founded in that summer before the outbreak of the Second World War, 1938. And now it is celebrating that anniversary by having a successful children’s author and comedian guest edit the comic.  The venerable title will reach its 4,00th issue sometime next year.

Bash Street Kids Bash On

The special anniverasry issue will go on sale this July and feature the children’s book writer alongside the Bash Street Kids, Dennis the Menace and Gnasher, Minnie the Minx,Roger the Dodger and Billy Whizz. The Beano characters all face an alien invasion in the comic, but we are sure they will all pull through in this durable favourite.  And old favourites from yesteryear will return with Lord Snooty, Tin-Can Tommy and Pansy Potter. The title is quintessentially British in its outlook and enduring charm. I still have my Beanos from childhood, do you?
