Parking Levy Mooted –

Campaign to Drive Cars off the Road

I went into the capital yesterday and I was struck by the pollution and of course the noise, little country mouse that I have become. My nose immediately became stuffed up and breathing through your mouth is never very pleasant so I wasn’t  very shocked when I read that anti car measures in Edinburgh are about to be kicked up a notch. It seems they are investigating how they could charge companies for letting the employees of the company park outside offices as part of the council's campaign to cut air pollution. It used be one of the perks of the job parking at work, but like the company car the tax man will get you eventually it seems.

Another Brick in the Wall

The capital’s transport and environment committee has set up to investigate the viability of a workplace parking levy. The publicity that accompanied the announcement seemed to indicate it was a foregone conclusion which will make many employers shake their heads as yet another burden is added. Nottingham was the first place in the UK to introduce a levy in 2010 and the capital is keen to follow. Nottingham businesses are charged £402 each year per space and the money goes towards transport improvements, including the city's tram network. The Edinburgh tram system could well do with a cash boost as I recall.  The levy is expected to raise from between £9m to £15m a year. No doubt employers would seek to pass the cost on to employees as Edinburgh moves to a low emissions zone in 2020.  Some parties want to extend the levy to customer parking which would be another nail in high street shopping.
