What!!! Alcohol Free Spirits?
It used to be the case of just getting through it when you were doing “Dry January,” but now there are so many non-alcoholic options for getting through that grim month. For ages there has been alcohol-free beer which is now of terrific quality, according to my missus who is a devotee of zero beer. And there are numerous very low, or zero alcohol wines, which I have to say is not of the same standard as the beer, it’s a bit ‘meh’ as Bart Simpson might say. But now there is a new kid on the block and it is high quality zero alcohol spirits from some very famous names.
It’s all part of the new trends towards wellness led by west coast America and Generation Z, but we all should be more aware of what is good for us, although my granny used to say ‘a little of what you fancy does you good.’ I was in a restaurant last week, we were glamping in a pod you see so we were out and about more than usual. In those places we frequented the bar menu included mocktails and NOLO drinks (Non and Low Alcohol) . And the most popular I am told is non-alcoholic gin. That will be my next port of call, although by jings it doesn’t seem to be cheaper than the variety with a kick.
I determined to research this and I did what every blogger worth is, or her, salt does. I looked up a survey, helpmate for all those who write about light news. More than half of bar staff in nice places in London and Los Angeles believe that the low and no trend will grow. Nearly half of restaurants are offering NOLO drinks and it is a trend that is bound to grow as in the UK half of the cost of alcohol goes to the Treasury as beer or spirits duty and nobody likes paying tax. Drinkers are interested in imbibing less alcohol, but still want to socialise as usual so they are zebra striping, according to the jargon, that is alternating alcoholic drinks with non alcohol drinks. We used to call that pacing yourself.
And if you fancy pacing yourself browsing through the James Pirie website we can offer some fabulous bargains to put your NOLO or regular drinks into and make every sip an occasion.
