How to Be On Trend with a Hugo Cocktail

If like me and the missus you have enjoyed an Aperol  Spritz , the last time was in a Venice – but not at Jeff Bezos’s  wedding, you’ll be surprised to hear that the fave drink of many folk during the hot months isn’t Aperol any longer.  It seems that the booze is a bit too strong for today’s younger drinkers who want a longer cooler drink. And you might ask what is the on-trend drink of the moment and so I can reply it is the Hugo Cocktail, with its key ingredient elderflower. How do we know that it has become immensely popular , well that’s down to a major upmarket supermarket delivery service which reports the sales of the fruit liqueur are more than doubled this year. And it is a truth universally acknowledged that press releases from delivery services are the plain unvarnished truth.

Now I am not one for viral videos, but I am informed that Hugo Cocktail is trending across social media, but I am pleased that it requires a native plant, the elder tree, as its key ingredient.  So now elderflower cordial isn’t just for elderly aunts. The drink was invented way back in 2005 by a bartender, Roland Gruber, as a lighter alternative to the Aperol spritz. There are videos galore showing how to mix the drink, some of them watched over a million times although not in Saudi Arabia I expect.  As regular readers know I prefer bitter to sweet and so Aperol  is more me and the Hugo a sugarier alternative which includes  Prosecco, mint, soda water and lime.  It is said that the original version included lemon balm syrup, which is hard to source and  was later often substituted with elderflower syrup

Now I’ve scoured the World Wide Web and I can give our readers a recipe for making the Hugo cocktail. Now you can use Prosecco or you can use gin, if you want it to have a bit of a kick!

Grab some mint from the garden, the neighbour’s garden in my case and scrunch it up a bit and put it into the glass with the gin OR the Prosecco (NOT BOTH) and leave it to infuse. Add a load of ice and pour over the elderflower cordial, about 20 ml, then fill to where you want with soda water, say 25 ml. Finally garnish with a wedge of lime. Enjoy and repeat!
