Have Your Dundee Cake and Eat It
Great Scottish Bake Off
This famous cake which was first baked by the Keiller family in the late 1700s has become a point of dispute in a turf war over where the baked goods can be lawfully made and still called, “Dundee Cake.”
All Out War, Well Nearly
In the same way that Cornish Pasties, Arbroath Smokies, Aberdeen Angus beef and Stornoway black pudding and of course Champagne are defined by EU law so Scottish bakers and more to the point Scottish lawyers are going head to head over a recipe which includes a candied Seville orange peel marmalade and Spanish lovelies almonds, sultanas and sherry alongside wholesome Scottish goodies, flour, sugar, butter, and free-range eggs.
Protected Status or Bust
Scottish Government is trying to give Dundee Cake the protected status of a marquee and this has provoked a gigantic row over who can make it in the future and retain the famous appellation. Scotland’s food secretary Richard Lochhead has applied for Dundee Cake to be legally protected against imitation in the EU Protected Geographical Indicator (PGI) status. If this succeeds it would mean that only cake made to the agreed recipe and, baked and decorated in the Dundee area, would be eligible to call itself Dundee Cake.
Let Them Eat Cake
But the move to give Dundee Cake the same protection national treasures like beef, haddock and black pudding are running into fierce area. Included in the opponents to the move are Shortbread House in Edinburgh, a bakery that wants to make the precious cake. But closer to home infighting has seen locals fighting as to the true area of the baking marvel, arguing over every centimetre of the proposed catchment area.
