Happy Thanksgiving, Great Black Friday

Well this Thursday is Thanksgiving in the USA and Canada and it’s a Federal Holiday. The holiday has its origins in the story of the Mayflower, the ship of the Pilgrim Fathers, not so much about mothers in those days! We might have called it a Harvest Festival, but the original pilgrims had a pretty rough go of it and had plenty to celebrate. The Mayflower passengers sighted land on November 9, 1620 after enduring miserable conditions for 65 days at sea. The  area was called Cape Cod, after all the bounteous numbers of cod in the sea, long before they were over fished to supply certain fish and chip shops. The pilgrims settled at Plymouth and the first Thanksgiving was celebrated in October 1621 and it became states wide event after George Washington asked Congress to make it a national holiday after the American War of Independence.

So on Thursday remember to wish all your American and Canadian friends “Happy Thanksgiving,” although lots I know say “happy turkey day,” the scamps! And this will of course give them the energy to go out on the very next day and spend, spend, spend on Black Friday, so called originally by Boston Police as it was the worst day for traffic jams in the year.
