Otterly Lovely from Herend

One of the most charming moments I can remember is when our family went to a wildlife park and we witnessed the captive otters and their babies singing for their supper. They gathered on a little bridge over their pool and sang so beautifully we almost cried with laughter and with our heart strings tugged we felt like better people afterwards. It is true that otters make people feel warm and cuddly. Now a baby otter has been rescued from the side of a road near Monymusk in Aberdeenshire. The poor creature is only about a month old and far too young to be dodging about among heavy traffic, confused and lacking her parents. The otter was so frightened it climbed up the legs of one of the rescuers, at which point they decided that she needed taking somewhere safe.

The rescuers wrapped the poor thing in a towel and took it to a local animal charity New Arc rescue centre near Ellon, where the tiny otter will have to remain for the next year while it gets a head start on growing up. In the meantime the baby otter will be on a diet of mother substitute milk until the next step which will be a milky fish soup, before she can be weaned and introduced to other otters in the otter enclosure. The otter has been named Baby Belle after the cheese the rescuers were eating at the time of the incident. Other processed cheeses are available!

If you want your own Otterly Lovely otter to love and cherish then take a gander at this Vieux Herend porcelain creation. It’s a stunning gift, or a present to self, of this intricately crafted, hand-painted figurine in a colourful fish scale design. It’s playful and of signal quality. Herend have been at the top of the tree since 1839, popular with the royal houses of Europe, and their figurines make wonderful wedding presents, treasured forever.
