Scottish Gold Revealed

A 20-carat nugget weighing around 18grams and was sifted from a river in Dumfriesshire and then almost throw away.  The nugget said to be the biggest in Scotland in the past 70 years was almost thrown away by the man who found it.

A Canadian man learning how to gold-pan found the precious metal, worth around £10,000..

The man known as “John” from British Columbia, was learning to pan under the tuition of expert panner Leon Kirk.

Panning Permission

John said: “Leon was telling me how to look out for haematite, the red-coloured mineral often found with gold. We were a few minutes into panning when I found the nugget with a bean tin, an underwater viewing tin with a glass base. I saw the piece lying just under the surface of the water and picked it up.”

He thought it was rubbish and thought to throw it away, but it was not iron, but real life gold. Nuggets of this size are extremely rare in Scotland.

God’s Treasure House

Most of the other larger pieces of gold have been found in the Lowther Hills which was once known as  ‘God’s treasure house’.
