Going for a Song? Not if it's by Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Now you might have heard of the hoo-ha that was set up over the sawing up of  some of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s church pews, but the man is hardly ever out of the news even though he died nearly a hundred years ago. Well 1928 to be precise. But his gifts to Scottish culture are outstanding as is the value of his creations.  Now in the news a set of cutlery that he designed has been sold at auction for a staggering amount five or six times the estimated price. Mind you I’ve been to a few auctions where I got carried away with the bidding and spent rather more of my hard earned than I expected to.  Anyone want an 18th century officer’s travelling Tantalus with six crystal decanters? I bought that back in 2003 intending to sell it in the USA, but as it predated the American Revolution, nobody wanted it. It was too old!

Anyways back to Charles Rennie Mackintosh, CRM, and his amazing cutlery which was sold to a bidder for more than £170,000, that’s a hefty premium. The pieces were commissioned by friends of the artist and they were artists themselves! Charles Rennie Mackintosh is noted for this magnificent Glasgow School of Art design and for the Willow Tea Rooms, though the custodians of the school of art get a school report of ‘must try harder’ as the place has almost burned down twice as they tried and restore it. The man who commissioned the silver cutlery set also commissioned CRM to design the school.

The original set was broken up as successive generations inherited, but this smaller set survived intact and has made a stunning contribution to the seller’s bank account.  The Charles Rennie Mackintosh auction sale also saw some of his gorgeous watercolours up for grabs and they collectively went for a cool couple of hundred thousand pounds.  I don’t know why money is always it’s the cool, but it always is.
