Glasgow Celebrates a Huge Anniversary - How to Mark Your Special Occasion
Glasgow celebrates the 850th anniversary this year since it was recognised as a Burgh, which was the royal recognition of the town. This allowed its transition into a strong trading entity and which helped the prosperity of the region. In AD 1175, King William the Lion granted Glasgow the much coveted Burgh status. The Burgh status was undone in the 1975 Act, but by then Glasgow was a huge city and a world famous engineering hub. And now in this anniversary year archaeologists have discovered rare mediaeval remains of the old Glasgow from the 13th and 14th century. The artefacts are in the Gallowgate area of Spoutmouth and were discovered nearly 15 feet below the current street level in the area where St Mungo founded a church and later a friary..
They were well preserved because the soils in that part of the town are super saturated by the Molendinar Burn and Polindrait Burn which are streams and the wooden items were surprisingly well preserved. There were pottery shards and pots, wattle fencing and 63 wooden posts laid out in lines. The archaeological discovery lies on the south side of the former line of the Molendinar Burn, which runs into the River Clyde. The burns are now underground having been culverted in Victorian times, perhaps around the time when James Pirie was founded.
