Do you want an A Listed modern house or studio to live in for a mere £18,000 then your chance is just around the corner? It’s in what they call in the Brutalist style. You might have seen the Oscar nominated film The Brutalist which won the best actor award this year but they didn’t explain that the origin of the term comes from the French words for raw concrete. Now I live in a modern architect designed house beside the sea and I can assure you that it didn’t cost £18,000, which is more like the yearly upkeep costs rather than the purchase price. But I can testify that living in so much light and air is mostly a treat. What’s not a treat is the upkeep. The house beside the A707 was built for a Serbian textile designer in 1972 by one of the greatest Brutalist architects in Scotland and is a symphony of severe verticals and horizontals in glass, brick and concrete blending in with the natural woodland around it on a gently sloping site. The first floor is connected to that sloping site by a bridge. Ours was built in 2008 by a Swedish architect! I know which I’d rather have. They didn’t go much on insulation in 1972. And sadly the building owners haven’t done much to keep the building in fine fettle and it has been in decay now for some 20 years. And because it was A listed in 2002 getting repairs and renovations done on this elegant and spare house will cost a pretty penny despite the low purchase price. Listed houses are not popular with developers for that reason so it is likely to go to an enthusiast rather than a professional.
