Both of Scotland's National Drinks Get Good News- James Pirie Sale

In the week that the President of the United States of America visited his golf courses in Scotland the topic of whisky has been on everyone’s lips.  For the distillers of the amber nectar, Scotch, the USA is a remarkably important market. The internet tells me that it accounts for about a quarter of all Scotch export sales by value. So when POTUS started talking about increasing tariffs on goods entering America the distillers needed a lie down in a darkened room. While President Biden was in the White house tariffs were 25% and the volume and value of Scotch sales fell in the country, knocking off as much as £600 million according to the whisky makers trade association.

For the moment it is all in a state of limbo, but distillers are hopeful that the ties to the ‘old country,’ POTUS’s mother was born on the Isle of Lewis, that the tax imposed on Scotch would be as low as zero. If that were the case exports would boom it seems.  So today the First Minister of Scotland followed the Prime Minister in buttering up the president in a meeting in the name of lowering barriers to trade in whisky. I don't think haggis got a mention, because so far it is banned in the USA.

This all followed the UK’s historic trade deal with India which is home to millions of whisky lovers, but not low whisky prices. Before the deal the humble consumer had to pay 150% duty on imported Scotch Whisky and that has been cut to 75% straightaway and in a slow decline to 40% within ten years.  That should make the potions even more popular on the sub-continent. And thinking about things orange  its good news for those ex-pat Scots living in India. The tariff on a certain fizzy drink made from girders and created in Glasgow in 1901 has seen tariffs cut from 33% to zero over time. So both of Scotland’s national drinks have had some encouraging news this last few weeks.

And talking of good news can I point you in the direction of the James Pirie Grand Summer Sale, which is nearing its end. So browse now and avoid disappointment later.
