For All Wine Lovers
Have you been watching the curious, but charming telly series Drops of God on AppleTV? It’s the story of a deranged Frenchman who pits two strangers against each other for his multi-million dollar wine collection and it’s in English, French and Japanese and you know what it works. It’s full of twists and turns and is really a thriller wrapped up in a love of wine. I even learned a new word, oenophile that is a lover of wine. The second series has just finished and it was a glorious spin through the world of wine, intrigue and family feuds. The love of wine doesn’t always extend to love of family.
But wine is an all encompassing thread though many lives. I’ve got a pal who makes a deal of money from corkscrews and I mean a deal. He sold one for something like £15,000 because he is a helixophile which is someone who collects corkscrews. While the delights of such a hobby pass me by I must admit the history of this practical little item is quite fascinating.
Did you know that corkscrews were derived from gun worms which were used to clean musket barrels of unspent gunpowder charges? And that in Scotland in the late 19th century, around about the time when James Pirie was being founded, Scottish whisky distillers offered promotional folding corkscrews which they sourced from local manufacturers to take the corks out of their whisky bottles. Yes, back in the day before screw tops whisky came corked. I remember sniffing the cork of the Drambuie my father was partial to when I was a lad. All in all the humble cork is one of the key elements in the production and enjoyment of wine. And of course one of the other elements in the enjoyment of wine is a good glass. A good glass you say, well you have come to the right place.
