Celebrate Success

The 2012 London Olympic games saw what looked like Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II  parachuting down from a helicopter in Danny Boyles’ remarkable opening event and this year’s Commonwealth Games saw King Charles and Queen Camilla emerge blinking from Doctor Who’s Tardis at the beginning of the competition. And a giant flying Tunnock’s teacake was the closing part of the opening ceremony. I wish I had the money to show you this flying delight!

The Games which was rescued from the scrapheap of history by the good folk of Glasgow was pretty much a success with more than 430,000 tickets sold. That’s a lot of bums on seats particularly for the Netball which sold an astonishing 100,000 tickets making it the most attended sport at the Games. The event was delivered by a private company for about one third of what the last Glasgow Games cost.

The royal family was there in force on the Saturday with Prince William, Kate and all the kids in attendance at the athletics at the Scotstoun Stadium. There Scotland’s Josh Kerr triumphed in the mile, a rarely run event that last took place at The Commonwealth games in 1966. Josh was a big hit with the audience as he took 45 minutes to commune with his multitude of fans who wanted selfies autographs and time with him before he received his gold medal.

The success of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games means that the template for future games will have been established, keep it simple, make it easy to get to and get round and make it as sustainable as possible. The Commonwealth flag was last night ceremonially handed over to the Indian city of Amdavad, which will stage the centenary event in 2030. Now I had to look up where that was and it seems it is on the western side of India, above Mumbai and about on the same line of latitude as Dubai. They won’t be worrying about dreich there!

Now if you want celebrate somebody’s triumph, or just want to tell a person tht you admire or love them then we have some answers here at James Pirie.
