Clocking Off - Retirement, The Good The Bad and The Ugly
In the week that we slough off the latest Prime Minister and his cabinet whip round produces one of the most expected surprises in retirement presents a carriage clock. The departing PM was presented with the symbol of the affection in which he was held and no doubt the presentation of the Légion d’honneur by France’s President Emmanuel Macron struck a less symbolic note. The late and great comedy legend Dave Allen joked in one of his sets that; we spend our lives on the run. We get up by the clock, eat and sleep by the clock, get up again, go to work — and then we retire. And what do they give us? A bloomin’ clock.
This week we also found out that the retirement age has moved again retirement has been in the news once again. It was planned that the state pension age would rise gradually to 68 years for men and women in the years April 2044 and April 2046, affecting those born between April 1977 and April 1978. But those pranksters at the Treasury have told us they are going to bring the increase in the retirement age forward by at least seven years, to 2037. Oh Bliss oh joy!
