Scotland’s Burning - But We Have Cool Picnic Offers

It’s a fact that 98% of the wildfires caused throughout the nation and indeed throughout the UK are caused by human intervention. It may be a machine causing a spark while harvesting or it may be a careless or even deliberate act. And it is both nature and humans who suffer. Just over a month ago Edinburgh’s venerable Arthur’s seat was ablaze in the heat and the fire service struggled for a day to control the fire. Now with yet another heat wave across the country there are fierce blazes from Wales and England to Scotland. Of course in the Highlands the presence of peat bogs which are drying out adds to the potential for wild fires.

So when you are out in the country please follow the Country Code and limit the potential for fire breaking out.

Official UK Guidelines for Outdoor Fires

No Open Fires: Campfires and open fires are strictly prohibited in most woodlands, heaths, and national parks.

Sunlight and Glass: Never leave glass bottles in woodlands or on dry grass. Sunlight magnifying through glass can spark devastating wildfires.

Dispose Carefully: If you have a permitted BBQ, ensure it is completely cold before disposal, and fully extinguish all cigarettes

Barbecues (BBQs): Only use BBQs in specifically signed and marked areas where they are explicitly allowed. In many places, it is safer and preferred to go for a picnic instead.
