There's No Business Like Show Business - Especially Showing an Ayrshire Cow
Do you have a bucket list, the outrageous ideas of what you should be packing into life? Is it hang gliding off a Monro, scuba diving off the Great Barrier Reef, or checking out Pompeii all alone with just a guide? I think I might have given myself away on the last as that’s on my bucket list. But when you get to the age of 99 not out the wishes are a bit more temperate. One resident of that great age had his wish, which was to go to an agricultural show and literally show an Ayrshire cow one last time. He was a former farmer, active in the industry for more than 50 years, and locally famous for his showing of the breed.
He was at a care home in Stranraer and the staff posted his wish on social media and hey presto in the big wide world of agricultural shows somebody noticed and the wish was granted by the organisers of the Stranraer Show. The retired farmer was guest of honour and he led out the cow into the parade ring for one more time. In honour of the occasion the old gentleman was given a special rosette. The show has celebrated 180 years of rural life, farming, food and livestock and for many it’s the highlight of the agricultural year. The former farmer himself was at the vanguard of agricultural developments, he showed black faced sheep from the Borders, made his farm into one of the first open farms in Scotland nd made carved shepherd’s crooks for sale. His rosette said: "Supreme Champion, Oldest Handler."
Now we here at James Pirie don’t do rosettes, but if we did they would be mighty fine ones! However, what we do do is give you ways of marking those special wishes, those extraordinary achievements and retirements in the very best way.
