St Andrews and All Good Things
As you know many great and good things originate in St Andrews and the latest is a discovery in an ancient city in Jordan.
Are you a fan of the movie character Indiana Jones? Do you remember the scene with the ancient Knight Templar and the Holy Grail? Do you hanker after archaeology finds? Then the ancient remains in Petra, used in that scene, may be your bag. There you will find the majestic Nabataean tombs and the mesmerising coastline along the Dead Sea, but these days they may be rather more free from tourists than usual because of the current tensions in the area.
A professor from St Andrews University was helped by this sudden dearth of visitors as he gained permission from the Jordanian authorities to investigate one of the key sites, the Treasury, in the ancient ruins. And guess what? He found a hidden crypt and skeletons that may be several thousand years old from the time of the Nabatean civilization. Using geophysics he identified a “void” beneath the Treasury floor and was I think fair to say gobsmacked by the find, he characterised it as “awesome!” There they found pottery alongside the human remains and as we all know pottery and glassware last almost indefinitely if untouched,
A professor from the University of St Andrews school of earth and environmental sciences has dated the soil samples and suggests the burial chamber was made between the first century and the second century AD. The archaeologists were immensely excited by the finds.
And you too can be excited by something that originated in St Andrews, because that’s where in 1890 that James Pirie was founded. And while you might want to hang back from going to Petra until the Middle East calms down a bit you won’t want to hang back from our lovely autumnal offers that will bring a gleam to any eye and become instant family heirlooms, capable of lasting decades and longer. And what could be more appropriate than a half price offer on a piece of recreated history. This is the Jacobean influenced Flower of Scotland Barley Twist Whisky Glass from Royal Scot Crystal? It comes in a luscious gift box and it has free gift wrapping if you tick the box at check out. Did I mention it’s on a half price? Oh I did, did I, so that’s grand? Here’s the tiny link.
