A Sure Thing- James Pirie Gifts

Now I don’t go to the bookies, except for the Grand National, but I do love  going to the race course and seeing the horses in the flesh.  And of course I love a ‘sure thing.’ But the missus will tell you I am a terrible gambler. The mounts are fantastically beautiful and exciting to watch, but one horse became a bit too exciting this last week.  A 10 year old serial loser called Rufio, was a 100 to 1 in the final race at Musselburgh. The gelding threw its lady rider off and decided that it was in need of a proper gallop, none of this going round in circles lark. He left the track and headed for Prestonpans.  So everyone was treated to the sight of a saddled number 7 dashing wildly through the town, until like a good motorist he stopped at some traffic lights.

Rufio was captured by a friendly passer-by and he is remarkably unscathed and is settling down for an equine Christmas. He really loves to run and he’ll be given another chance at the races in the new year.  And since Prestonpans is nearly 2.5 miles (4km) to Musselburgh  and the horse was in the lead at the time it unseated its ride in the racer it’s obvious  that Rufio needs a longer race to be able to succeed. He really is a ‘stayer.’
