A Grouse Named Jock

Picture the scene, the sun glinting on a beautiful Highland Glen, the smell of heather and call of the birds – then a loony Red Grouse comes hurtling towards you trying to head butt your car.

The Grouse has been nicknamed “Jock” after his dive bombing exploits we witnessed by visitors to a single track road near Dunkeld. This display of naked aggression is a first in Red Grouse, which are pretty rare even up in the Highlands and its Kamikaze behaviour worries wildlife enthusiasts and the local gamekeeper.

Grouse Kamikarzi

Jock has been flying at passing vehicles and blocking their way on the single-track road and warning visitors with a strident version of the red grouse’s “Go back! Go back!” call. Grouse will usually flee from danger, but not Jock he’s definitely quite the laddie.

Jock’s territorial display is likely caused by his instinct to protect his mate, who will lay eggs in coming weeks, b ut he has always been a b it of a character say those who know the stroppy bird.

But locals are worried that his protectiveness will lead to his demise. A confrontation between car and grouse is not one Jock can win.

Despite his aggressive stance, however, the bird has also been known to “politely” escort visitors back to their cars and has even apparently posed for photographs. Red grouse are known to exhibit territorial behaviour towards other birds, particularly during the breeding season. But few venture close to humans.

Henry Grouseinger

A local worker said “He could work on his diplomacy, and it might be slightly better for him. The greatest problem for Jock is his own behaviour. If he keeps whacking himself against cars he will probably get injured.

Drink to Jock’s Health

Well if Jock doesn’t turn into a second Henry Kissinger it may well ends in tears. But why not end it in cheers and toast Jock in a whisky of your choice, but certain brands spring to mind.
