Owl Grabs a Helicopter Lift

A short -eared owl was this week flown to safety off an oil rig. No it hadn’t been earning extra cash as a roustabout, or delivering mail like Harry Potter’s owl Hedwig. Instead its inner sat nav had gone awry and sent it out a hundred miles to sea. The owl was on its last legs when it found its way onto the oil rig as the only landing place in thousands of square miles of North Sea.

Toowhit oh Noo!

The oil workers set to looking after the owl and making sure it recovered enough to be airlifted off the rig. Then it was helicoptered out, riding in the main cabin with workers returning home to their loved ones.  The owl in question is yet to be named by the SPCA wildlife rescue centre in Fishcross, Alloa, Clackmannanshire, who have taken over the care of the lost bird, but some Potter fans have suggested some book inspired names: too whit , J. K Owling, Harry Potterer, Owlus Stumblemore and Owlanda Hooch.

What a Hoot, Owl Wises Up

It is unusual for owls, birds famed in mythology for their wisdom to lose their sense of direction so completely and it may take the bird a while to recover. So the owl, however named, will be restricted to the aviary for little time as it recovers its strength and hopefully regains its sense of direction.  It should be ready for release in time for the next full moon.
