What's Best Cats or Dogs, Sherry or Port?
Some people are cat people and some are all for dogs, but I like both of them and cats are our enigmatic friends. And they can become famous like the Downing Street cat Larry or the Edinburgh moggie Hugo who was run over by a hit and run driver two years ago in the capital’s west end.
Now there are plans to memorialise Hugo in bronze and have him become the 16th animal sculpture in Old Reekie. The beastie was well known and the feeling is that a life size bronze situated on a wall would become a tourist attraction and loosen the purses of tourists in the city. The cat, an Arabian Mau, was rescued from Doha and became a feature of the neighbourhood. A friend of mine rescued “Kipling” the cat from Myanmar and then smuggled him into Thailand until he could be taken to Doha where he was living at the time. Now Kipling lives in Carcassonne and he’s a very well travelled puss. There’s a picture of Kipling above.
Now as I said cats aren’t for everyone, but neither was either port or sherry in the recent past, but now these tipples have been discovered by hip young people. They appreciate the depth of flavour and the exoticism of these age old drinks.
