The Galloway Hoard is an immensely rich and famous assortment of silver and gold valuables from the age of the Vikings. The Hoard was unearthed by metal detectorists, like Mackenzie Crook, in 2014 at Balmaghie, Kirkcudbrightshire. The gold and silver weigh in at some 5kg and some of it wrapped in well preserved textiles from the period. With ever more cutting edge techniques revealing the fascinating details the star of the collection is a silver jar with a lid that demonstrates how Scotland was far from isolated some 1,000 years ago.
The silver jar is not a native of these shores it is from far flung west Asia , in what is modern day Iran. It was wrapped in textiles when the metal detectorists found the object, but careful preservation has allowed the designs of this sublime object to be revealed . It is covered in crowns, leopards and tigers and many other designs. It now resides in the warm embrace of the National Museums Scotland where it will eventually go on show, with some items also at the Kirkcudbright Galleries. The jar’s imagery is from the Zoroastrian pre- Islam and which still has remnants remaining in Iran and is very definitely exotic in every sense of the word.
