The Highlands Success Story
Not far from Ullapool and Lochinver home of Highland Stoneware is the Monro rich area of Torridon in the Highlands which was the home of Callum the red deer who became hand tame and a popular favourite with tourist. However, it was this friendliness that was his downfall. Callum was a wild animal who became a bit of a local legend and would haunt Torridon’s Beinn Eighe car park eating snacks and scraps from the hands of visitors. As he got older he no longer wanted to forage in the natural way and this was to be his undoing.
As you and I know, if we live on snacks, crisps and chocolate we won’t be very well and it so it was with Callum. He became arthritic and his teeth weren’t in good shape - he had poor body condition, and poor coat condition. Poor old Callum, he the animal welfare people we forced to put an end to his suffering: A lesson for us all!
This feeding of wild animals by tourists is a problem throughout the Highlands and authorities are always warning against feeding the wildlife, no matter how cute they are. The Highlands are a wondrous area of great natural beauty with a very special fauna and flora. They are something to be treasured and in order to keep the natural balance in the area we also need to keep jobs in the Highlands, so they don’t just become a theme park for tourists.
