Sir Andy and Kim and the Lion Poo in the Garden

I am somewhat schizophrenic in my attitude to birds. I spend the entire winter feeding the little ones and the spring and summer trying to deter the large ones from despoiling the house and garden.  Regular readers will know that we live beside the sea, right on the beach and there are twin horrors. seagulls and wood pigeons.  A one legged seagull we call stumpy was trying to make a nest with its mate on our brand new flat roof. Now you might know that sea gulls are generally a protected species and the missus pointed out that shooting them was illegal and that really we liked Stumpy, just not fouling our roof and skylights. So we invested just shy of £100 in a humane sonic seagull deterrent from France that emits “modulated high frequencies.” These frequencies are like chalk across the blackboard for seagulls and they send them off looking for new places. Now gulls are super smart, so these frequencies have to change and adapt according to an algorithm so that the beasties can’t adapt and ignore them.  It seems to have worked, so far. But it did involve going onto the roof and strapping the device to the satellite array.  The wood pigeons have been dealt with by putting little plastic spikes on the roosting spots on the balconies. They are ugly, but I am just trying to re-educate them away from the house. This is with less success as wood pigeons are the stupidest creatures possible.  I saw one having a fight with a competitor for a female’s attention get run over by a car as it was incapable of doing two things at once, so raging was its passion.

Now I am not alone in trying to deal humanely with nature’s pests. Great Scot Sir Andy Murray and his wife Kim own a super hotel, the Cromlix just outside of Dunblane.  The couple bought the hotel around the time of his first Wimbledon triumph in 2013 paying £1.8m for it. It was named AA Scottish Hotel of the Year last year. It’s a cracker, sitting in 38 lovely acres with deer roaming across the glades.  But just like I do the couple feel that some of the beasties are getting out of hand. The deer roaming is good until they start eating all of the tulips and spring flowers that make the grounds so attractive to visitors. Now Kim and the staff at the luxury retreat have come up with a novel way to deter the ravages of the deer, LION POO, yes the poo of lions. It seems that deer are hard wired to avoid lions, aren’t we all, and their excrement which is very pungent indeed scares the pants off deer and makes them stay away from poo marked areas.  Kim get the stuff from a local wildlife park with a pride of lions and they are spreading the bad news around the flower beds to humanely deter the deer.
