Cute, Small, Red and Agile

A thug has shot a red squirrel near Lockerbie and it has triggered a police investigation as these marvellous creatures are a protected species.

Scotland is home to some eighty five per cent of the world’s red squirrel population and this endangered animal has a difficult enough time of it already.

They are quick and agile and spend more time aloft than their nasty grey cousins, who were imported from North America. I know how delightful they are as I was recently in southern France in Cahors and saw one of the little belters in a tree and spent a happy half hour watching its antics, leaping between trees.

Camouflaged Nasty

The red squirrel was shot with an air rifle; a man carrying such an item was seen at Gallaberry Road not far from the scene of the killing.  Police and the Scottish SPCA are currently engaged in a hunt for the thug who was described as stocky and wearing a camouflage jacket and hat.
