Hope for the Haggis
Hope for the Haggis
Dreadful Embargo to Be Lifted
Since 1971 our American cousins have been deprived of that most Scottish of delicacies, the Haggis. But secret and not so secret negotiations between Scotland’s Food Secretary and the American Department of Agriculture have made progress. The veritable Haggis called by Robert Burns, ”the Chieftain o’ the pudding race,” is made from lamb products that have been previously been banned. The original 1971 embargo was over some of the ingredients of the Haggis which included lung tissue from sheep and this was made worse when at the height of the BSE scare in 1986 all Scottish lamb was banished at a stroke from the USA.
Ten Million Americans Have Scottish Claims
And as we know full well Scottish lamb is amongst the finest in the world and at a Burns Supper there is no substitute for a grand old Haggis. At the moment more than 10 million Americans claim Scots ancestry, so that’s a lot of deprivation out there, more than the entire population of the home country! It is hoped that within two years Haggis will be back on the shelves in the good ole USA and we’ll raise a glass to that.
Usquebaugh or Whisky
If you know of someone who would make the most of a dram and a slice of the Chieftain of the Pudding Race, well now is the time to give something quintessentially Scottish, something to drink the water of life from. And boy do we have some good stuff to drink the good stuff from.
Ye Pow'rs, wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o' fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies;
But, if ye wish her gratefu' prayer
Gie her a haggis!
