Otterly Charming

Now I don’t know if you like otters, but I absolutely love them. They are cuddly warm blooded killers, but so cute! Ever since I read the book and saw the film of Tarka the Otter by Henry Williamson I have been a big fan of theses wonderfully adapted creatures which are whip smart and can even use tools to open shellfish. Tarka’s statue in Bideford even has his own FaceBook page! But the deal was sealed for me and mine when we went to a wildlife park.  Did you know that in order to be called a zoo such a place has to have an elephant? Wow! It was towards the end of our visit and I’d been chatting to the owner of the park and he said don’t miss the otter feeding. So we all popped down to the otter complex and there on the bridge were all the otter’s lining up waiting for their grub. And they started singing and it was tremendous and almost tuneful. So you could imagine our delight and it made the day. We’d hand fed birds and all sorts of beasties and been terrified by close proximity to a tiger, but for sheer charm this was just nuts.

So you can imagine my pleasure when I heard that two ten week old otter cubs had been rescued from the engine compartment of a car in Skelmorlie, North Ayrshire. In the cold snap we’ve been having they had been orphaned and were near to death. They’d been seen out and about by residents, but no-one had been able to nab them for their own protection. But the sweeties, now named Juliet and Valentine are now safe.

Like all these things with wildlife these days the locals had to seek permission from the police to get the youngsters out of the car engine bay, but they were given that and after a night in a cardboard box the SSPCA were able to come and take the pair to a rescue centre where they will be kept with other orphaned otters until they are strong enough to be released into the wild.

The little otters were suffering from the Scottish climate as we all do, but suffer no more as James  Pirie has teamed up with a rescue effort of our own and we can proudly present the Remony throw range. This is from a manufacturer from the banks of Loch Tay who has been making the best of the best since 1783. These versatile throws are in the finest 100% Merino lambswool.
