Border Collie With a Rucksack

A Scottish author has taken his Border CollIe dog, Meg, off on a journey that follows in the footsteps of Robert the Bruce the 14th century king of Scotland. Robert was a fugitive at the time and hunted by fierce enemies.

Well Known Author and Border Collie Meg

Author Gregor Ewing followed in the footsteps of the Bruce as he tried to turn the tides of his fortune even after being defeated three times in battle. It was a path that led eventually to the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 and Scottish independence. Mr Ewing’s book comes out later this month and it tells the story of his journey from  Dalrigh near Tyndrum,  Inversnaid on Loch Lomond, the possible site for the spider in the cave story, then  finishing at Arrochar at the head of Loch Long.

No wobbles with a Collie

Ewing used Barbour’s 14th century The Brus and Robert Bruce to research the journey. For the entirety of the trip he was accompanied by his faithful four legged friend, Meg.  She is a six year old Border Collie Bitch and she carried a small rucksack containing her food and a blanket.

Mr Ewing is giving a talk about Bruce, Meg and Me on 4 June at the National Library of Scotland.
