Living Your Best Life
Avid readers of this blog would know that I almost entirely focus on good news from Scotland and the rest of these isles, but sometimes there is a story that pulls at the strings of the heart and warms the spirit. Late last year we went to visit friends in Carcassonne and they organised a wonderful day out. It was a day out with rescue donkeys. You paid the sanctuary owner a smallish fee, 70 Euros and we got a donkey per couple for the day. They are such sweet creatures with 100% a mind of their own. It was a fabulous day. We walked and the donkeys carried the wine and picnic. They spent the day snacking at the verges as they went. We got a bit lost at one point and walked the animals through a small town, much to the amusement of the locals. Then I heard about Diesel the donkey.
As I said they definitely have a mind of their own and this donkey took off one day from Auburn California and has been missing for five years. In 2019 Diesel the 8 year old donkey was spooked and took off during a hiking trip near Clear Lake. Now he has been found it seems and he is living his “best life” according to his previous owners and it’s a life with wild Elk. Yes, those sizeable members of the deer family not known for their friendliness. This domestic donkey has fully adapted to life in the wild where he was filmed by a hiker, who posted the film to the internet of their now happy and healthy wild burro just a few miles away from where Diesel first went missing. Notable also is the fact there are no wild donkeys known to live in the area. His life in the wild might go on for many years too as donkeys regularly live as long as 40 years.
