Are You Sitting on a Mountain Million of Small Change?

Spring Cleaning Cleans Up

THE RIVER BANK

The Mole had been working very hard all the morning, spring-cleaning his little home. First with brooms, then with dusters; then on ladders and steps and chairs, with a brush and a pail of whitewash; till he had dust in his throat and eyes, and splashes of whitewash all over his black fur, and an aching back and weary arms. Spring was moving in the air above and in the earth below and around him, penetrating even his dark and lowly little house with its spirit of divine discontent and longing. It was small wonder, then, that he suddenly flung down his brush on the floor, said 'Bother!' and 'O blow!' and also 'Hang spring-cleaning!' and bolted out of the house without even waiting to put on his coat. Something up above was calling him imperiously, and he made for the steep little tunnel which answered in his case to the gravelled carriage-drive owned by animals whose residences are nearer to the sun and air.

Wind in the Willows, 1908. Kenneth Grahame d. 1932

The Quintessential book about the riverbank and the English at play (through animal avatars) was written by a Scot, Kenneth Grahame, and he wrote it while working at the Bank of England and existing as a struggling writer. He didn’t have the money to go to university, so he rubbed along at the bank counting the pennies. And if we are to believe a headline or two counting the pennies can add up to big bucks.

Money in That Thar Sofa

Well it is one of those surveys again, this time the lock people Yale, telling us that we have a fortune down the back of the sofa. They reckon that there is over £300million pounds sitting around in houses, in the darkest corners, shelves and a bit of spring cleaning. It is revealed that the average person in the UK has £12.70 tucked away around the house. A study exploring the hidden value around our homes found the average person has £12.70 in small change. So spring cleaning might well be a good bet to find a little bit of cash, as well as blowing the cobwebs of the winter away. People responding to the survey claim to have found everything from a live snake, or wooden leg to a stuffed animal lost in their own household detritus.
