Annual Braemar Gathering Gets Royal Presence –
This Year in Aid of Storm Frank Victims
Royal Deeside saw The Queen once more in attendance at the 201st annual Braemar Gathering the largest of the Highland Games. She has been coming since she was 7 years old in 1933 and she always has the September event in her diary, along with lots of other members of the Royal family.
Storm Frank Floods
The whole area was hard hit when the River Dee burst its banks last December after the enormous rainfall from Storm Frank, but the village of Ballater was severely affected and is barely over it now. This year Gathering is helping to raise funds for residents affected when the River Dee burst its banks in December.
Royal Tradition
The Braemar arena was more like a curling pond in the immediate aftermath of the storm and the groundsmen had to work like Trojans to make the arena fit for a Queen. As you will remember Queen Victoria was the first monarch to attend the gathering in 1848 and it has been a royal hot spot ever since. The Queen has attended virtually every year since coming to the throne in 1952.
A Right Royal Celebration
Well I hope you haven’t forgotten it is the Queen’s 90th birthday this year and there is still some time to get yourself, or give to a friend or loved one, a souvenir of the event that will become a prized family heirloom. Go on, treat yourself.
