Time’s Arrow and Stirling’s Bowling Green Restored –
Hoping to Find Evidence of Cromwell’s Siege
A green that was part of a garden designed in 1713 for Cowane’s Hospital in Stirling and which is the oldest surviving bowling green in Scotland is to be restored to how it was more than 300 years ago. Cowane’s Hospital is an A listed property quite near to Stirling Castle and it was originally an almshouse for the poor of the area. It was built a bequest from local man John Cowane. John was a prosperous merchant and great benefactor to the town. By the later part of the century it was the place of the guildry. And there the leading lights of the town were then the first to bowl on the green. The Guildhall Bowling Club took over the green in about 1903 and over the years the original green spread. The new renovation will take it back to its former size
Going Back in Time - Huge Project Delves into Stirling’s History
Landscaping Archaeologists are set to excavate the green and there find out the original layout and design so they can recreate it. In the nature of these things successive generations have adapted and altered it for contemporary reasons. The restoration is set to cost a whopping £150,000, but may lead to the eventual reopening of this historic bowling space. The green was originally laid out after the bulldozing of tenements, or however they termed the destruction of houses back in the day. The archaeologists believe that they may discover domestic evidence going back to the 12th century, which may not be a lot as ordinary people in those days were short of even the essentials of life. Or they might find some remains of the occupation of the area by Oliver Cromwell who laid siege to Stirling Castle in 1651. There will no doubt be lots of metal used as cannon shot and the like.
Going Forward in Time
As those of you interested in physics will know there is a term ‘The Arrow of Time’ which was coined by Arthur Eddington, who was from Westmoreland and whose thinking was no doubt aided by his natal proximity to Scotland. Arthur gave the structure to the thought that all time and events are basically going one way. And that without time the world becomes nonsensical and time’s arrow is the only property of time which cannot be said of space where there is no analogue of the arrow. And if you want to watch time’s arrow with a dash of style then look no further, we can’t bend the rules of the space time continuum, but we can sell you a very decent clock in a lovely mount.
