Butchers and Bakers Get Pie Eyed
Pie in the Sky
The good bakers of Scotland and the great butchers are at something of loggerheads, and I don’t mean the village in Wales. The World Scotch Pie Championships have been beset by troubles that could get somewhat crusty. The row is between the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders Association and the industry representative body Scottish Bakers and it means the near twenty year old annual competition is imperilled.
The Steaks Are High
In the past the butchers and bakers have come together to make up the Scottish Pie Club which is effectively the world championship of pies. But now the butchers who make up more than half of the entries plan to launch their own contest.
Earlier this year 100 of the finest butchers and showed 500 pies which were assessed by 50 judges. And the winner was the craft bakers The Kandy Bar in Saltcoats, Ayrshire which was a double whammy for the outfit as they were previously named Scottish Baker of the Year, in the world championships last January.
Pie Squared? Life According to Pie!
Now the Bakers have dissolved the Scottish Pie Club, by fiat say the butchers, and are planning a rival competition. But the butchers are reluctant to participate in a competition under the sole auspices of the Scottish Bakers. In fact they were shocked by the decision of the bakers to go it alone, after what they felt was a very successful partnership over two decades.
They Have Some Crust!
The Scottish Federation of Meat Traders Association which has well over 400 members feel there is no point crying over spilt gravy and have said they will be forced into running a rival competition under the banner of the New Scotch Pie Club. The rival event will be open to both butchers and bakers but while feelings are still running high, who will dare to enter? It came hard n the heels of the great Killie Pie problems that are besetting Kilmarnock , there will be more about that later.
A Pie Man?
Well if you are a pie man about me, I saw a great piece of graffiti on the motorway recently “Vote Pie” you’ll find all this dissension over the great Scottish Pie upsetting, so I’ve found a special offer on Skye wine sets that will calm the nerves, save a few bob and stop you brooding over a life of pie.
Go on have a nibble.
